You have been with a company for 3 years, consistently work had and deliver tasks and projects as requested on time. You often stay late but do not claim overtime. A new staff member has recently joined the company and you were shocked to discover they have just been promoted to the position you had been hoping for. You approach your boss to ask why you hadn't been considered for the position and they reply that they did not know you were interested they thought you were quite happy as you were as you had not mentioned anything at appraisals and had shown no interest in staff meetings in anything other than your own work area.
